[Soooo he's been quiet for a few days, but as the mako poisoning works its way through his system, Zack's starting to speak out a little. Cue silly incoherent babblings.]

....don't..... eat.... my hair.

[That gets a flicker of reaction out of him; not much, but enough to get him smiling. Cloud usually makes him smile one way or another.]

.... came back.

You talking about me or you? [Cloud busies himself with adjusting Zack's blankets; he'd twisted them around his legs in his struggle to reach his journal.]

...ha... haha. [That's all you get, Spike. Zack loses interest in the journal - still having no idea what it is - fingers curling lightly in the blankets, as if seeking something else.]

I know it sucks being stuck in bed all day. [Even if Zack isn't hearing or comprehending everything Cloud's saying, he knows from experience that at least some of it is getting through. So he continues the conversation as if everything were normal.] I can take you outside again, if it doesn't wound your pride too much to let a midget like me carry you around.

[Zack's still a few miles out of proper comprehension, but a sound from the window makes him try to turn his head, eyes widening a little. He can't focus on anything, but he knows there's something there.]

....choco.... keh...?

[Cloud follows his gaze, though he doesn't see anything.] Ch-...oh, Tammy? You want me to bring Tammy here?

[Zack lifts his head a little, then flops back down again, voice lowering to a near-inaudible mutter.] ...my girl...

She's missed you. She's getting a little too big to stay inside for long though; we'll need to build that stable soon, so hurry up and get better. [Cloud tries not to let a pleading tone slip through, but...well. Zack makes being hopeful look easy.] I'll go bring her to you.

[Zack's quiet for a while, dropping back into silence and blank staring.]

...sorry. That was a little depressing. I'll be right back. [Cloud pats Zack's hand and hurries to fetch Tammy. Lo and behold, she was outside; a bit of coaxing -and mention of Zack's state of awareness- was enough incentive for her to leap into "Mama's" arms and demand to be taken to see him. It was a short trek back inside and to Zack's room.]

We're back; Tammy, be gentle.

[Tammy warks her usual greeting and flutters over to trot onto Zack's lap, nuzzling here and there to get his attention. He doesn't do much, but his fingers twitch when she nuzzles his hand.]

[And Cloud resumes his vigil at Zack's bedside, snagging his own journal and flipping through, a pen behind his ear as he checks to see if there's anything worth talking about.]

[Tammy settles down to coo at Zack's hand, and after a few minutes his hand starts to move, clumsily stroking her feathers.]

...mom...?

[Wondering if Zack had slipped back into a memory -or if he was just voicing his thought process aloud- Cloud watched him carefully, silent. Either was equally plausible...it could even be neither. Mako poisoning was a very...well, lonely, confusing and terrifying condition to be in.]

[It is lonely, he's right, but for the moment, Zack's not so alone. He calls out once more, more softly this time, before going quiet again, still stroking Tammy's feathers with one hand, stretching out the other towards Cloud.]

[Naturally, Cloud takes his hand and squeezes.]

Still here. I'm not going anywhere.

...still here... [Zack tries to squeeze back, grip tentative, but there nonetheless.]

[And that's enough confirmation that Zack's coherent enough at the moment to understand; the smile comes much more easily now, and Cloud casts the journal aside in favor of clasping Zack's hand between his own.] You're gonna be fine. You're making a hell of a lot better progress than I ever did.

[Zack mumbles something briefly before rolling his head around to try and catch Cloud's gaze.] S... slow goin'.

Pfft, you call this slow? You're like rocket fire, Zack. I wouldn't say no if you felt like speeding things up, but maybe that's just because I'm starting to miss the banter. [Cloud clutches a little harder to Zack's hand to mask the trembling.]

[Zack doesn't register the trembling, but he might remember it later. Who knows.] Got... it back. Got it back, Spike...

I know. ...I'm not happy about how you got it back...but I know how bad you wanted it. I guess I can't stay angry, since it's not your fault.

[Big words, man. Well, okay, not big words, but big sentences that he's having trouble understanding. His eyes waver for a few seconds, then he shifts against the bed, tugging at his hand.] ...help...

Help...up? Getting up? [Cloud shoos Tammy aside and moves to take Zack's arms to help him stand.]

Nn... nngh. N... no. [Zack tries to shake Cloud off a bit once he's sitting up, though it's likely he'll fall over again if he does let go. Tammy warks in protest and flutters closer again.]
