[Mako Dreams - Voice / (In)action]

[Soooo he's been quiet for a few days, but as the mako poisoning works its way through his system, Zack's starting to speak out a little. Cue silly incoherent babblings.]

....s... burning...

Spi... urk....

...auugh...

....don't..... eat.... my hair.

[Zack mumbles something briefly before rolling his head around to try and catch Cloud's gaze.] S... slow goin'.

Pfft, you call this slow? You're like rocket fire, Zack. I wouldn't say no if you felt like speeding things up, but maybe that's just because I'm starting to miss the banter. [Cloud clutches a little harder to Zack's hand to mask the trembling.]

[Zack doesn't register the trembling, but he might remember it later. Who knows.] Got... it back. Got it back, Spike...

I know. ...I'm not happy about how you got it back...but I know how bad you wanted it. I guess I can't stay angry, since it's not your fault.

[Big words, man. Well, okay, not big words, but big sentences that he's having trouble understanding. His eyes waver for a few seconds, then he shifts against the bed, tugging at his hand.] ...help...

Help...up? Getting up? [Cloud shoos Tammy aside and moves to take Zack's arms to help him stand.]

Nn... nngh. N... no. [Zack tries to shake Cloud off a bit once he's sitting up, though it's likely he'll fall over again if he does let go. Tammy warks in protest and flutters closer again.]

[Okay, okay; Cloud backs off, though he hovers a bit, questioning.]

[Zack wavers a little, then shifts once again, to the side, slumping almost bonelessly against Cloud's side.] ...'m okay.

[Oh.

Well, Cloud can do that. He has a seat on the edge of Zack's bed and shifts them both around a bit so they're more comfortable -at least, he is; hopefully Zack is too- and winds an arm around him. It figures; Zack is such a touch-oriented person, after all.]

[He's too isolated, mentally, to feel comfortable lying around alone like he's been for the past few days. He's craving contact like air, and it's killing him that he has no control over it at all. He wants to touch, to banter, to bother, but his mind's half-gone and his body isn't connecting well enough to what's left. He'll be back. He knows it, Cloud knows it.

He just needs a little help first.]

[With Zack slumped over like that, Cloud's able to press his cheek to his temple and sling his arm companionably around his shoulders. Closing his eyes with a little sigh Cloud allowed himself to relax, and his hand lifted up to comb through Zack's hair.

After a moment, almost in impulse, Cloud began to hum a little tune; it wasn't much, something soft and calm-sounding, but he wasn't sure where he'd heard it before. He's not exactly the best singer but he's at least on key, and while the words don't come to mind, the melody easily does. Zack would probably appreciate the sound over silence anyhow.]

[It takes him a while, but eventually Zack tries to hum along with him; it's broken and disjointed at first, but gets stronger the longer he goes, stumbling over a word between hummed bars now and then. The fact that he can carry the tune decently is miracle enough.]

[It takes him a second -Cloud just thought he was making sounds- but he becomes aware of the fact that Zack's humming along with him. So...it was a song Zack knew. Probably sang it in the lab, or while they were on the run.

With that realization, Cloud lets the song drift off towards the end, falling back into silence. The weight of the situation falls back down on his shoulders and he tenses to keep from shaking. He'd almost lost Zack, not to death but to the thing he'd actually wanted the most; his strength, his mako. And it was something Cloud would never have been able to protect him from; if John hadn't taken him, Zack probably would have eventually gone of his own free will. His fingers still in Zack's hair and he holds him a little tighter, locking his jaw.]

...Zack...

[Zack keeps humming after Cloud stops, the sound absent and almost eerie, what with the way it's wavering every other note. He clings to Cloud almost like an infant, lost and lonely and unable to fully understand what's going on, so completely unlike how he used to be. It's surreal, in a way, and even Zack knows it. He's shaking a little, unable to stop humming.]

[Registering Zack's tremors, Cloud turns and pulls Zack into a proper hug, his chin atop Zack's hair.]

It's okay, [he mumbles.] It's okay. You'll be fine. I promise.

Fine. Okay. Yeah... [Zack lets his head rest against Cloud, closing his eyes, letting himself relax and rest in the comfort of his best friend's company. Sometimes there's nothing left to do but settle down and wait. He did it for Cloud, and now, Cloud's doing it for him. Full circle.

It's... a strange, yet oddly satisfying feeling.]

[Cloud doesn't exactly find it satisfying; if he could have done anything to prevent this from happening, he would have. Even if it meant Zack despising him, not having his mako back...he never wanted anyone to experience mako poisoning, least of all Zack.

But he hadn't been able to prevent it. All he could do now was do his best to fix it, in the only way he could.] I'm sorry...

I'm sorry. I know it's hard. But it'll be over; you'll be back soon.

Mm... [Zack shifts a hand to curl in Cloud's shirt, the shaking finally fading completely.] You... take care of me.

W-well what else am I supposed to do? [Cloud's laugh is a mixture of incredulity and worry. That Zack even needed to point it out was ludicrous.]

...My line. [Zack gives Cloud's chest a little poke for that.] What I do.

Yeah, you do. [That ends the laughter, and Cloud trails off, clutching Zack a little harder.] Even right now.

Naw. [Zack muffles a sound, almost - almost a laugh.] You're okay too.

[Pause.

Hug.]

[Hug back.

You deserve it more than anyone, Spike.]
